As we enter a new era of content creation, we’ve been predicting what will be big in the product photography world in 2023!
First, let’s have a look back at 2022…
IN MOTION
This year saw products in motion become increasingly popular, from video clips to stop-motion, we couldn’t get enough of moving content!
This was even reflected in still images, with levitating products capturing a moment of action.
AUTHENTICITY
Authenticity was favored over heavily edited and staged images, with brands looking to add personality in a real, genuine way.
MINIMALISM
Minimalism was also popular with some brands opting for a ‘less is more’ approach, allowing the product to do the talking. Precision lighting, geometry, symmetry and repetition was used to create interest, without relying on too many props and embellishments.
So which of these do we think will carry on into 2023? These are our predictions!
2023 PREDICTIONS
VIDEO RULES
Video and moving images will continue to shine.
There is a huge amount of evidence showing that moving images hold viewers attention much longer than a still image, so brands will be keen to take advantage of this.
We’ve already seen this take effect, with most of our briefs now including a video or stop motion video element.
We think capturing motion in still images will carry on being popular too!
SOCIAL FIRST
Creating content for social media is already a huge part of our work, and we don’t see that changing in a hurry! Content creators have adapted the way they shoot to ensure content works for smartphones, with portrait framed set-ups becoming more popular than ever.
To give you an idea of the size of the market, Tiktok had over 1.5 billion active monthly users at the start of 2022, and is expected to hit 1.8 billion by the end of the year!
We also anticipate that user-generated style content will play a larger part of our work this year (read more about that here!)
360 DEGREE IMAGES
360 degree images are slowly growing in popularity, particularly when shooting for ecommerce, such as Amazon product photography. We predict that this one will be a slow burner as brands begin to understand the technology further.
AUTHENTICITY
We think authenticity will continue to be a focus in lifestyle photography through 2023, with heavy editing taking a back seat. We’ll see Quality over quantity, with well thought-out
Brands will be keen to show a personal, human element in their imagery.
NOD TO NOSTALGIA
In design and branding trends, we’re likely to see a nod to nostalgia, with retro colour schemes and vintage style typefaces leading the way. Anything from the 70’s to early ‘00’s could make an appearance, and we expect to see this reflected in creative product photography too.
MINIMALISM/MAXIMALISM
Minimalism looks set to continue, with bold, contrasting colours being used to catch attention. Although chaotic maximalism is gaining popularity with Gen Z audiences, so there could be an interesting mix of the two in 2023.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Finally, the rise in AI generated imagery looks to continue into 2023.
We’ll be interested to see how this develops over the year!
