2024 Photography Trends Predictions

Updated: Dec 22, 2023

We all know how quickly everthing is progressing these days. In science, technology and culture the march forwards seems to keep accelerating at an ever increasing pace, which is why it's vital to stay up to date with current trends and advancements. Here are some of our thoughts on 2024 Photography Trends.

AI Dominates

AI generated content blew up in 2023, with people creating and enhancing both imagery and text with apps such as Midjourney and Chat GPT.We expect to see this continue throughout 2024, with programmes becoming more sophisticated and difficult to detect.

Adobe have already released updates for 2024, including multiple AI-powered features which will be a game changer for photo editing!

Along with this, we predict much more regulation of AI generated content to come into play next year.YouTube have just announced that they will be implementing new labels on AI generated video content, so viewers know that it has been altered in some way.“Specifically, we’ll require creators to disclose when they’ve created altered or synthetic content that is realistic, including using AI tools” - YouTube 2023.

Bold Colours and Gradients

We have already seen a huge rise in popularity in bold, block colours and minimal set styling. We predict that this will continue, with products being the key focus.

To mix things up a bit, we’re expecting to see more gradient colour next year. Bright and colourful gradients have been popular in the graphic design and packaging world for a little while, so we expect to see this filter into product photography trends too!

Surrealism

We predict that product photography styling will include an element of surrealism.Props of unusual shapes and sizes could be used to create slightly surreal set-ups, possibly with strong 3D elements like blocks and plinths. This could be paired with geometric elements, shapes and patterns for a contemporary look.

Personal Event Photography

During 2023 we’ve seen a rise in demand for personal image content from events and shows.Brands exhibiting or attending events want to share their experience on social media, and what better way than a photo of themselves and their products in situ?

Rather than overall ‘atmospheric’ images from events and shows, we’re expecting more demand for unique, brand-specific imagery, ready to share on their social platforms.

Educational Content

We are bombarded with images, videos and ads every time we look at our phones, so brands will need to find new ways to cut through the constant stream of content, and deliver content which is genuinely engaging.

We predict that product photography will start to veer away from the standard studio shoots, and focus on educating the viewer. This could be through explainer videos or recipes, helping to show the viewer how their product could be used and how it would be of benefit to them.

Short and snappy Reels are perfect for this, helping to build brand awareness and credibility by showing real life products in use.

User Generated Content is Key

2023 saw the rise of user-generated style content, and we see this continue to grow over the next year. ‘Influencer’ style product photography will go hand-in-hand with more polished studio shots, with brands learning how to effectively combine the two.

Sustainability

As everyone is keen to reduce their carbon footprint, we predict that brands will be keen to show this in their product photography.Natural aesthetics are likely to come into play, with earthy colour pallets and materials being used to help tell a ‘sustainable’ story.

Overall, we can’t wait to see what 2024 brings and start introducing these new trends! Check in with us this time next year to see what we predicted correctly.
