Planning An Amazon Photography Shoot: Where To Start

It’s easy to overestimate the amount of work for an Amazon product shoot. These days the most successful amazon sellers will have a variety of imagery, infographics and a video for each of their listings. We’ll be sharing our insights into the best way to plan a shoot using our recent project with Frontliner Sports as an example.

  1. Pre-production

The most successful listings include white background imagery, lifestyle imagery, infographics and video. This will give a complete view of what the product is and what it does. The more information the consumer has, the more likely they’ll choose the product over others. Before making any form of schedule, we need to think about creating a brief. This will involve communicating with the client to understand their needs and researching the brand to make sure we are aware of their story, style and target audience. Other things to consider during this stage are whether you need any specific props, locations, equipment or models for the shoot.

  1. White background Imagery

White background imagery is something that shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s the first image the consumer will see when scrolling through their search page – so it needs to be impactful. Most of the products we were shooting for Frontliner Sports were clothing items, therefore we needed to consider the ghost mannequin method – having clothes that look like they’re being worn without a model. As we were working with t-shirts, socks and gloves, we needed to make sure we had the appropriate mannequin parts for the job. There is also a degree of photoshopping required to remove the plastic mannequin for the final image and therefore it’s important to reflect this editing time in your schedule. It’s always a good idea to try several angles to best present the product and its features.

  1. Lifestyle Imagery

Lifestyle imagery is the most interesting and creative part of the listing. It’s important to consider how to communicate what the product is and what it does. As we’re dealing with sports clothing, it’s best to demonstrate its use in a gym or outdoor environment. This is when we need to think about locations and models.

  1. Infographics

Infographics are great for pointing out specific details and features of a particular product. When planning these, we need to think about leaving space for text and also capturing closeups to use within the infographic.

These can either be captured in a lifestyle setting or a white background setting – as these can be easily cut out and placed on any background.

Product Video

Videos are the best way to showcase the product in action. When planning a video shoot, it’s vital to create a storyboard and a shot list. This will save you from missing any features or details and will allow you to create a flowing, engaging video. We focused on flexibility and the durability of the gym clothing and therefore wanted to showcase movement throughout the video while demonstrating the core features of the product.
